The new Bowman Charter School gym is to be officially opened with basketball on Wednesday featuring graduating students. Principal Kelly Graham, seen here, said the school is inviting the public for the accompanying ribbon-cutting event.

It’s time to celebrate at Bowman Charter School, with completion of an $8.2 million gym and classroom construction project.

The work started in spring 2017 and leaves the school with a high-school-size court and bleachers for spectators. Classrooms on the ground floor of the two-story building will be used for choral and band classes. And there’s room in an unfinished area on the same floor for boys and girls locker rooms and coaches’ offices.

Work also included doubling the number of parking spaces and improving traffic circulation.

To mark completion of the project, the Bowman Road school will be holding a ribbon-cutting event at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

“There will be some short speeches and then we’ll open it up and let people walk around for a tour,” Principal Kelly Graham said.

Speakers will include Ackerman School District Board President Kim Williamson, board member and Bowman graduate Mike Belles, and former principal Gary Yee.

Graham said his speech will include giving credit to the school board for the foresight to save the money that was necessary to move the project forward. He’ll also be thanking staff and students for their patience while the school was involved in the construction project.

The event Wednesday will include a barbecue.

Next up for the school - which is maxed out at 610 students - is developing two soccer fields with softball diamonds on 6 acres to the west of the current campus. Graham said the school is hoping to develop the field using volunteer labor and donated equipment.
