Colfax Library offers free summer reading program for kids and adults

If children continue to read over the long summer break, the practice can benefit them in many ways, according to library officials.

Reading just five books over the summer can prevent learning loss, develop stronger reading skills and can result in higher scores on standardized school tests, according to information provided by the Placer County Library.

To help children bridge the “summer reading slide,” the Colfax Library is offering “Read for the Win,” a free summer reading program that runs through July 30.

The program is important for children and teens because it cultivates a life-long reading habit, said Colfax Library branch manager Amie Toepfer.

“It motivates reluctant readers to embrace books they want to read and helps children keep their reading skills,” Toepfer said.

Students read more when they choose materials based on their own interests, she added.

Included in the summer reading program are prizes and a wide variety of programs, activities, and performers for children, teens and adults.

“We want everyone reading during the summer.  Everyone has a chance to win a prize,” Toepfer said.

Librarians give each age group a different type of reading log: Pre-Reader (ages up to 4), Reader (ages 5 to 12), Teen (ages 13 to 17) and Adult (ages 18 and older).

Sign-ups for the summer reading program take place during regular business hours at the Colfax Library, 10 West Church St. in downtown Colfax.

When participants sign up for the program, they are given a reading log and told how they can earn tickets for a prize drawing.  All children will receive a free book if they complete their logs, Toepfer said.

Colfax Library business hours are:

Tuesdays: Noon to 6 p.m.

Wednesdays: Noon to 5 p.m.

Thursdays: Noon to 5 p.m.

Fridays: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturdays: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
