Big August for Colfax area sports sceneBy: Mike Ray, Colfax Record
“Hot August Nights” won’t have anything on the Colfax and foothills area next month as local sports followers will have a bevy of events to choose from to keep them busy.
First, August gets kicked off with the 17th annual 49er United Gold Rush Classic soccer tournament set for Aug. 8-9 at fields in the local area.
More than 50 youth boys and girls soccer teams will vie on fields from Colfax to Meadow Vista to Auburn to Lake of the Pines.
Locally, matches will be played at Colfax High School and Winchester Park in Meadow Vista. Teams from as far away as Clovis and San Jose will compete with Colfax and Auburn area squads and teams from Roseville, Sacramento, Stockton and Elk Grove areas in divisions ranging from boys and girls under-9 to girls under-19.
The 10th annual Colfax High Football Tailgate will follow on Sat. August 15 at the Living War Memorial Park in Colfax. Activities that day are set from 4-10 p.m. Tickets, which are being sold by Colfax High football players, are $25 per person for adults and $10 for children.

On the weekend of Aug. 21-23, the Colfax Recreation’s golden celebration of its 50th annual Men’s Fast Pitch Classic will be held. Known as Northern California’s “Longest Running Men’s Fast Pitch Tournament”, the tournament dates back to 1966, this year’s men’s fast pitch tournament will draw squads from Grass Valley, Roseville, Sonoma, Reno and Auburn.
The tournament will also include a Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Saturday evening, Aug. 22 and tournament street dance with the Kenny Frye Band providing the music.
And finally, it’s hard to phantom that the 56th football season in Colfax High history is just around the corner – like less than 30 days away.
The Falcons will kickoff its 2015 campaign when they entertain Argonaut’s Mustangs on Friday, August 28 at Marson Stadium.
This year is a special one for the Falcons as head coach Tony Martello is entering his 20th season as head coach of Colfax’s grid fortunes.
