AUBURN– The Placer baseball team found its new coach, and it’s a very familiar face.

Dave Thompson, making his third stint as a coach with the Hillmen was hired Monday as the head varsity baseball coach.

Thompson, a Placer grad from 1974, coached the Hillmen varsity team from 1998–2007 while locking in two league titles in what was the then-Sierra Foothill League.

After the ‘07 season, Thompson spent five years as a recruiter for Sierra College before returning to Placer to coach the JV baseball team from 2012–14. Thompson also spent time as an assistant coach at Roseville High.

Thompson said he has some good young players coming up to varsity this spring from his JV squad a year ago.

“We’ve got a lot of good players,” said Thompson. “We’ve got some seniors who we should get some leadership out of, and we’ve got some good young players coming up. So, I think we’re going to be OK.”

Thompson, who also was an assistant basketball coach for over two decades at Placer, is looking forward to an exciting season with the Hillmen in the new Foothill Valley League.

“I love it,” he said. “It’s about time we got moved up. We’re trying to load up as much as we can. We’re gonna play Del Oro up here on a Friday night, Granite Bay on a Friday night. Colfax and  Bear River both want to play us. We’ve got some good night games lined up.”

The Hillmen baseball team, which starts fall ball this week, have finished with only one winning record over the past three years.
