Placer County squeaks into state’s Top 10 employment rankBy: Gus Thomson, Reporter/Columnist
Placer County’s jobless rate is holding onto its ranking as one of the lowest in the state, with a 3.3 percent rate that was good enough for 10th place in California, according to the latest state Employment Development Department calculations.
Placer’s 3.3 percent unemployment rate was lowest in the region, with El Dorado County and Nevada County both at 3.6 percent, Sacramento County at 4 percent and Yolo County at 4.1 percent.
Placer County’s July jobless rate was down from 3.6 percent in June. The region’s rate was also down from 4.1 percent to 3.9 percent — and below the 4.8 percent unemployment rate estimated a year earlier.
Across the state, the unemployment rate is at 4.4 percent. Nationally, the jobless rate is 4.1 percent.
Labor market analyst Cara Welch said that professional and business services led month-over-month growth in the region, adding 1,900 jobs. Trade and transportation was also strong, with a spike of 1,300 jobs.
Year-over-year, the region has increased the total number of jobs by 14,600 — or 1.5 percent.
