Jurassic Encounter: Fun reigns at Auburn’s Gold Country Fair

The food and the fun, the farm animals and the excitement of the midway held Auburn in their grip at the Gold Country Fair this past week.

And if there was one official food for a California fair, it would have to have been once again a gooey heap of calories known to one and all as a funnel cake.

“It is sooo good,” fairgoer Chelcie Bullen said as she sampled a cake from Funnel Express piled high with whipped cream and strawberries — and drizzled with caramel to add an extra layer of complexity to the tastebud tantalizer.

You can’t go to the fair without having a funnel cake,” Bullen added.

At the Funnel Express booth, Lorrie Sutton said she couldn’t estimate how many she would serve by the time the fair four day fair ended Sunday but that the business was expecting to stay busy all weekend.

For Funnel Express, the secret to success that has kept it going for 30 years is quality ingredients and the promise that each cake is made fresh to order, she said.

Around the fair, thousands took in the sights, sounds, smells and sensory overload with wide smiles on their faces — and the promise of a funnel cake, if they wished.

Here are some photos to remember the 2018 edition of the Gold Country Fair.
