AUBURN CA - Detectives were continuing to search Friday for clues into the mystery surrounding the death of a baby, whose body was found inside a trash bag Thursday at the side of a Newcastle road. A Placer County Sheriff's Office deputy was flagged down by a woman late Thursday afternoon in an undeveloped subdivision off Newcastle Road, who pointed out the bag. The unidentified woman had noticed a foul odor coming from the bag. The deputy checked the bag and found the body, which is being described by the Sheriff's Office as an infant. Detectives were called to the scene and canvassed nearby neighborhoods into the evening, said sheriff's spokeswoman Dena Erwin. The area the body was found in is called Green Hills Estates. An autopsy was completed Friday and the baby was determined to be "near term," according to Erwin. No further information, including the baby's gender, was released due to the ongoing investigation, Erwin added. "Detectives are asking for the public's help in finding the mother of the baby" Erwin said in a statement. "Anyone who may have known a recently pregnant female who is no longer pregnant and does not have a baby to please call the Sheriff's Office at (530) 889-7800." Anyone with information who wants to remain anonymous and be eligible for a cash reward up to $1,000 can call Placer County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-923-8191. All calls are confidential.
