Roland Wentz of Colfax was walking, as usual, along the Stevens Trail around 6 a.m on Monday when he saw something unusual: A 300-pound brown bear. The bear didn’t see him. In the six years Wentz has been hiking the historic trail, he said he’s seen bear tracks before, but never an actual bear. What concerned Wentz is how close the bear was to town. He said he saw the adult animal a little over a mile from the trailhead — “between the big waterfall and the cave.” He planned to report the sighting to the Bureau of Land Management.
