For the first time since 2008, the Colfax High Falcons have gained a berth in the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section’s soccer playoffs. The Falcons closed out their Pioneer Valley League campaign last Wednesday by posting a 2-0 home win Bear River.
The victory by the Falcons moved Colfax’s final PVL slate to 6-2-2 and allowed the Falcons to finish in third place and sew up one of the league’s automatic three berths to the post season.
In a new format that moves the soccer playoffs somewhat closer to how the section’s football playoffs look, league finish and enrollment were taken into consideration for the soccer playoff brackets.
Colfax was seeded sixth in the eight-team Div. IV bracket and will open the playoffs today at 3 p.m. on the road against Sierra of Manteca. Sierra, 13-3-4 overall on the season, tied with Manteca for the Valley Oak League title.
The Falcons will be looking for a win to advance to next Wednesday’s second round. Colfax is bracketed with No. 2 seed Placer and No. 7 seed Galt. The two winners will play next week at the home of the highest remaining seed.
In the upper half of the bracket, No. 1 Vista del Lago hosts No. 8 Ceres and No. 4 Lincoln will entertain No. 5 Dixon. The section title match is set for Saturday, Nov. 10, at either Lincoln of Stockton or Cosumnes Oaks. Site and time will be determined.
Colfax, now 11-3-4 overall, used two first-half goals by Ben Rooker to provide the Falcons with their margin of victory against Bear River. Jacob Ritchey was credited with an assist, while goalie Jeff Mulkin had six saves.
Colfax JVs 1, Bear River 1 – The Falcons, with a goal from Scott Irons, sewed up the PVL junior varsity title with the tie against the Bruins. The Falcons finished the season with a league record of 7-1-2.
