Too often we hear negative comments about the education system in our country, but last week I saw proof that public education in our community is thriving. On Thursday, the Soroptimist Club honored 12 Colfax High students for their outstanding achievements. The students’ speeches were articulate and gracious as they spoke of their years in our school districts and the parents, teachers and community that supported them. They were thankful for the many learning opportunities they were given, and are weaving these experiences into exciting dreams for their futures. These representatives of the Class of 2011, the product of our community and public education system, are going off to elite colleges all over the country (Berkeley, Puget Sound, Harvard, UCLA) with plans to become doctors, scientists, teachers, musicians and public servants. Having taught 11 of these students in eighth grade, I can say that seeing their growth, accomplishments, and ambition filled me with pride to be working in a system and community that can teach and inspire our youth to strive for such greatness. I, for one, can’t wait to see what the Class of 2011 will do with the next steps in their education and their lives! Suzanne Scotten, Colfax
