Colfax captures crown at Classic

The Colfax High girls soccer team had an impressive two days at the Cal Spring Classic in Marysville, bringing home the first-place trophy from the “B” Division. The Falcons (3-1-2) defeated Vanden 2-0 in the championship game Saturday. Senior Chanel Filteau had a goal and an assist to lead the way. Piper Lofrano added the other goal and junior goalkeeper Amber Cramer had six saves to earn the shutout. Senior Josie Ruzette had an assist for Colfax. Earlier Saturday, Colfax tied Galt 2-2. Kacey Capuchino and Ruzette both had second-half goals as the Falcons responded from a 1-0 halftime deficit. Ashley Broussard passed out an assist. Colfax started the tournament with a 2-0 win over Placer as Capuchino and Brittany Talley scored goals. Filteau and Ruzette had assists while Cramer had six saves. The Falcons also beat Vacaville Christian 3-0 with goals from Filteau, Capuchino and Ruzette. Lofrano and Ruzette each had assists. Placer went 1-1-1 at the tournament, capped by a 3-0 win over Vacaville Christian on Saturday. Laura Nash, Celeste Havener and Stephanie Bonitata found the back of the net. Chelsea Deschwanden and Havener added assists, while Lizzie Phillips and Tori Jordan combined to get the shutout in goal. Audrey Furlong and Laurel Odom scored in the Hillgals’ 2-2 tie against Galt. Lianna Moneypenny had an assist for Placer (1-2-1). Colfax’s junior varsity team also placed first in its flight with three wins and one tie. Forest Lake second at Cal Spring Classic Forest Lake Christian took on some of the area’s top competition and came away with a second-place trophy on Saturday in Marysville. The Falcons fell to Sac-Joaquin Section power Davis 3-0 in the championship game. In the semifinals, the Falcons stunned Woodcreek 1-0. Junior Christa Weisman scored on an assist from Lindsey Engbrecht in the first half, and the lead held up thanks to strong defense from Alaura Woody, Taylor Engbrecht and goalkeeper Morghan Pomeroy, who had 15 saves. FLC opened the tournament with a 4-2 win over Bradshaw Christian. Weisman had a hat trick, Katelyn Seitz had two assists and Kaylee Lommori had one goal. Kacie McGeary added an assist for Forest Lake.
