Colfax Elementary School fifth-graders in the classes of Mrs. Debbie Wilson and Mrs. Faith Smith wrote Arbor Day essays for the annual Colfax Garden Club observance. Their topic was “Why Do Trees Improve the Environment?” First place went to Erin Robinson; Jacob Colon was second; Daviana Ackerman, third; Matthew Bittaker and Ethan Karlberg, fourth; and Hailey Hickey received an honorable mention. On March 7, the six winning essayists were treated to lunch at the Colfax Pizza Factory, where they read their essays to their parents and Colfax Garden Club members. Linda Herold, a garden club member, told the students about how Arbor Day got started and Jewell DeLapp, also a club member, spoke about Luther Burbank. The afternoon was topped off with a tree planting at the Colfax Lions Children’s Park, where they planted a Kwanza flowering cherry.
