In an exciting finish, the Colfax Falcon JV football team overcame a multitude of early mistakes to rally for a 27-20 win over Wheatland Friday. Slowed by penalties and fumbles in the early going and trailing 20-0 at one point in the first half, the Falcons used a 75-yard touchdown pass from Clay Southerland to Cody Baugh with just 1:54 left to play to wipe out a 20-19 Pirates lead and get the victory. Now 3-2 on the season, Colfax began its long comeback when Southerland scored on a five-yard run to trim Wheatland’s lead to 20-7. After Cory Wilhelm recovered a Pirates fumble, Colfax struck again when Austin Perry carried it over for six more points from seven yards away. The Falcons got closer in the fourth quarter as with 3:46 to play a four-yard run by Henry Freer trimmed the Pirates lead to 20-19. Colfax went for two points on the conversion but a run was no good. After holding the Pirate son downs at their own 25, Colfax took over with just under two minutes to go and Southerland found Baugh on the sideline where he darted the remaining 75 yards for the score. Perry’s two-point conversion run was good for the final margin.
