The Bureau of Land Management announced Friday that the shooting range off Carpenter Road in the Secretown/Magra area has been closed. The closure was done to protect maintenance crews working on railroad tracks burned in Monday's 20-acre wildfire as well as to protect public lands from wildfire. According to BLM Assistant Field Manager Jim Eicher, this week's fire was started by target shooting. Two weeks ago, a 33,000-acre wildfire was started in Mariposa County by a target shooter, he added. Any person who violates this closure could face a fine of up to $1,000 or a year in prison or both, Eicher noted. The range will remain closed until further notice.
