Del Oro golf coach Hal Steinback figured it would take a great effort from his Golden Eagle golfers to hang with the big boys at Monday’s CIF Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament. Playing near Stockton at the Reserve At Spanos Park, Steinback’s golfers went one better. Placing all five of their top scorers in the 70s, the Golden Eagles shot 381 to shock the field and win the school’s first ever CIF Masters championship. “Unbelievable,” said the Del Oro coach. “What an exciting day for Del Oro sports. The kids were just fabulous today.” Del Oro, which won the Sierra Foothill League championship but then just squeezed into the Masters by finishing one stroke better than Oakmont for third place in the Div. II sub-section, finished ahead of Davis (382) and Granite Bay (388). Further back in the pack were perennial Sac-Joaquin powers Jesuit (391), Oak Ridge (392) and Christian Brothers (392). Leading Del Oro’s title surge were Austin Smotherman (71), Eric Ash (73), Robert Sahlit (79), Canyon Rowe (79) and Justin Raskin (79). Don Bollard had a non-scoring 93. Del Oro will now make its first ever trip to next Monday’s Nor Cal Regional Tournament set for Butte Creek Country Club in Chico. Baseball Colfax 5 Pioneer 3 at Woodland – Austin Young went the distance and spaced out six hits as the Falcons went on the road to defeat the Pioneers in a Div. III first round playoff game. Sam Guzman ripped a RBI triple and Ryan Glazner added a two-run double for the Falcons who improved to 15-11 on the season. Colfax will play Rio Americano Wednesday at McAuliffe Park in Sacramento at 7 p.m. in a second round game. In another first round game, Bear River defeated River Valley, 8-3.
