Early Grid Matchups Give Comparisons

Comparatively speaking, it’s fun to size up early season scores to get a “feel” for what lies ahead in the just started prep football season. After two weeks four Pioneer Valley League schools own 2-0 records and another is 1-1. All total the PVL is off to a good start with a 9-2 overall mark. So, using the “this team beat that team” format from the first two weeks as a barometer, here’s a quick look at what to expect in some upcoming Pioneer Valley league non-league action that is scheduled before PVL play opens Oct. 8: Colfax (2-0) – In two games the Falcons have allowed the least points (31) of any PVL team. Colfax, a 21-13 winner over El Camino in zero week, should get a better feel about themselves when they play at Union Mine Friday. Union Mine is coming off a 47-29 win over, yep, you guessed it, El Camino. Lincoln (2-0) – The Zebras, relying mainly on a running game, have defeated both Woodcreek and Natomas by identical 28-21 scores. The win over Woodcreek gains some positives for the Zebras after the T-Wolves went out and defeated Casa Roble, 46-35 last Friday. That’s the same Casa Roble that visits PVL favorite Placer on Sept. 17 in Auburn. The Zebras take their “bye” this week and then ready for home games with Yuba City Sept. 17 and a highly touted Wheatland squad on Sept. 24. That’s the same Pirates who will visit Colfax, Oct. 1. Bear River (2-0) – The Bruins capitalized on Capital Christian’s quarterback being sidelined by injury and pounced on the Cougars for an easy 24-7 win last Friday. BR gets brownie points because Cordova, who they defeated in Week One, downed Bella Vista, 33-21, last weekend. This week the Bruins travel to Garden Valley to meet a 0-2 Golden Sierra team that two weeks ago – with Capital’s starting qb in place – lost to the same Cougars, 27-20. Final deduction: take the Bruins by 30. In another Bear River item to file, the Bruins play Sept. 23 at River Valley in Yuba City. That’s the same River Valley team that defeated Sutter, 23-20, on Friday. That’s the same Sutter team who lost at Bethel see below), 18-7, last week. Placer (2-0 ) – The Hillmen go into their “bye” week coming off a slim 27-26 win on Saturday night at Bethel of Vallejo. Placer will have two weeks to get ready for Casa Roble. The Hillmen will also play Woodland and El Dorado in non-league games. Grid Picks Last week’s 9-2 record pushes the season slate to 17-4. This week things should get a little tougher: Colfax 31 Union Mine 30 – These two teams have a history of going up and down the field on each other. Bear River 24 Golden Sierra 12 – Former GEL rivals in rematch of 1994 CIF Div. III title game won by the Bruins, 3-0. Yuba City 23 Lincoln 20 – Remember all those zero week match ups that would have never took place 20 years ago, here’s another one. Foothill 24 Amador 21 – Mustangs showed speed to burn in win at Oakmont last week. Elsewhere: Del Oro 27 Clovis West 21; Nevada Union 33 Monterey Trail 20; Johnson 17 Center 16; Whitney 29 Rocklin 20; Sierra College 27 Butte 25.
