Evan Wolfe flew plane in Auburn Air Show

10 YEARS AGO Aug. 8, 2002 – Colfax resident Evan Wolfe is an avid pilot, aviation historian and attorney. He is also the chairman of the Thunder in the Sky, the Aug. 17 Auburn air show at the Auburn Airport. When away from his legal practice, Wolfe enjoys flying his T-28C vintage single engine trainer. Three wildland fires were reported within a 45 minute period late Tuesday afternoon. The first fire was reported at Long Ravine Campground at Rollins Lake. The fire was contained to a small area with minimum damage. Shortly after the 3:15 p.m. fire was out, a second fire was reported in the Weimar area near Crother Road. That one was also quickly contained with little damage. The most serious fire was reported five miles east of Cool. Over 150 firefighters were dispatched as well as air tankers. A large column of smoke could easily be seen from Colfax and surrounding communities. While burning over six acres, no major damage was reported. The fire was under control by 6 p.m. Colfax will return to celebrating Independence Day on July 4th, Colfax Area Chamber of Commerce president Greg Westphalen told a packed city council chamber Tuesday night. “Thee will no longer be an event on July 3rd,” he said. Community leader Bill Medlin has been appointed the new Colfax Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director. He will be fourth person to lead the Chamber in the past three years. 20 YEARS AGO Aug. 12, 1992 – Everyone is invited to the inauguration of the new Iowa Hill Firehouse with a party on Saturday, Aug. 29. The fun begins at 2 p.m. and continues until midnight at the new firehouse on Iowa Hill Road. The Foothill Bull-Ettes girls 12 and under AAU basketball team finished 16th in the recent AAU Nationals held in Kenner, La. The Bull-Ettes were made up of hoopsters from Colfax, Auburn, Grass Valley and Roseville. Coaching the team, which was one of 40 to vie in the tourney, was Jim Geddes, of Alta, and Kyle Orr, of Auburn. Local players included Stephanie Truscott, Meadow Geddes, Carrie Miller and Katie Kuelper. 50 YEARS AGO Aug. 9, 1962 – The Colfax Area Chamber of Commerce directors met Wednesday morning at the Little Red Hen Café, president Dick Wayland presiding. It was voted to write the State Division of Highways, Assemblyman Paul Lunardi Senator Ronald Cameron asking that an additional interchange entrance be planned for Colfax. Another road matter, it was voted to send letters also to the Division of Highways, Placer and Nevada County Board of Supervisors and the Nevada Irrigation District suggesting a road across the proposed new Rollins Dam and realign State Route 25 to the new dam from the present route. Plans were shown of proposed subdivisions at Sierra Lakes Estates at Cape Horn and one at Alpine Meadows. Norman E. Kimm and Ruby Kimm, present owners of Gold Run Store, have filed notice of intended sale of the business in the near future to Mr. and Mrs. Orburn H. Moore of rural route, Colfax. The Moores live between Weimar and Applegate. Miss Herlinda Ramirez, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jose Ramirez of Alta, is now wearing the wings of a Braniff International Airways flight hostess following her recent training school at the airline’s headquarters in Dallas, Texas. She is a former employee of the Colfax branch of the Bank of America. Ramirez is based in Dallas. The first carload of plums arrived this week at the Colfax Fruit Growers Association and are in the cold storage plant awaiting shipment. The cold storage plant of the Association will be used this summer for storing fruit from Placer and other counties in the state. Funeral services were held last Thursday in Sacramento for Mrs. Agnes M. Pearson, 85, who was a native of Gold Run. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Shade, who settled in Sacramento in 1848, establishing a clothing store. The family later moved to Placerville. The Colfax Theatre was hosting a midnite showing of “The She Creature” and “It Conquered the World” on Friday, Aug. 17.
