Falcon Boys Upend Chico In OT; Win Davis Tourney
DAVIS - Continuing to play at a high level, the Colfax Falcons boys basketball team capped a big weekend by capturing the championship of the Les Curry Invitational tournament here Saturday night.
Playing previously undefeated Chico, the North Section's No. 1 ranked large school, Colfax received a balanced scoring effort and played heady down the stretch to squeeze out a 68-65 overtime win over the Panthers.
The Falcons , now 9-2 on the season, were knotted at 56-all at the end of regulation with the Panthers before surviving a late Chico three-point barrage and connecting on clutch free tosses from Jordan Balser and Taylor Dorsey for the victory.
"A big, big win for us," said Colfax coach Mike O'Connell. "Chico is very good but the kids dug in tonight and did the job."
Colfax led most of the way early on including 17-15 after a quarter before Chico pulled even with the Falcons at halftime, 25-25. In the third quarter, Colfax opened up a six-point advantage but the Panther s again rallied to just trail by three, 41-38 going into the final eight minutes.
In the overtime session, Colfax built a five-point lead before surviving Chico's foul tactics and ensuing three -point shooting spree that the Falcons answered with their clutch foul shooting.
Will Buell, the tourney MVP, led the Falcons with 21 points while Balser added 13, Matt Larson 12 and Dorsey 11. O'Connell also praised the work of 6-5 senior Wade Lewis who came off the bench and supplied strong minutes when Larson got into foul trouble.
