Two down and one to go.
That’s the storyline this week for the Colfax High School football team as the Falcons put their second week of practice behind them and gird for Saturday’s scrimmage session with Oak Ridge.
Varsity action at Marson Stadium will begin at 9 a.m., with JVs following at 10 a.m. and freshman at 11 a.m.
Saturday’s scrums will be the final tune-ups before the three Falcon squads open their 2011 season the following Friday (Aug. 26) when they host El Camino’s Eagles from the Capital Athletic Conference in a non-league tripleheader.
According to varsity coach Tony Martello, the Falcons picked up the pace in this week’s drills in anticipation for Saturday’s test with the always-tough Trojans.
“We should find out where we’re at pretty quick on Saturday,” said Martello. “Oak Ridge is pretty good. I put them right up there with Grant, Folsom and Del Oro.”
Oak Ridge will offer the Falcons multiple looks on offense and feature wide receiver Dylan Collie, the brother of Austin Collie of the Indianapolis Colts. The younger Collie has already committed to play next season at BYU.
Martello and defensive coordinator Jeff Baggett have been using Colfax’s early practices to get the team into shape and also start to look for players to step up at spots where position battles are ongoing.
Although the total number of varsity players are low this season compared to past years for Colfax at 38, Martello feels his team has a good mix of experience and youth that will come together.
One of the team’s strengths could be in the offensive line where starters Brett Fowler, Cory Rodgers and Dustin Downey all return.
“They’re doing a good job,” said Martello of his three senior veterans. They’re helping the young guys along.”
On the defensive side of the ball, Baggett will be counting on new faces to join returning players Jeremy Dawson, Matt Anglade, Nolan Karbowsi and Roger Lillie.
Colfax won the Pioneer Valley League title last season with a 5-0 mark and finished 10-3 overall but graduated several key players.
“We’re working hard and trying to get ready,” said the Colfax coach. “We’re taking things one step at a time.”
