Former Colfax resident passes away in Washington

Former Colfax area resident Mike McCary passed away in Port Townsend, Washington April 6 after a valiant three-year battle with cancer.

Mike McCary, 61,  had resided in the Port Townsend area for the past thirty years where he was active in community affairs including coaching sports at the youth and high school level. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service and had retired after becoming ill in 2010.

A 1969 graduate of Colfax High, Mike McCary was a four-sport varsity letter winner for the Falcons and the school's student body president. He also coached varsity baseball at Colfax High for one season. He was preceded in death by his father Frank and his mother Doris.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Kim, and daughters Jennie McCary of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Katie McCary Smith (Justin) of Seattle, and Maggie Bell (John) of Bremerton, Washington.  Also surviving are brothers Rob of Mission Viejo,California and Kenny of Cedar Ridge, California, sister Cathy Avery of Port Townsend and mother-in-law Jan McMannis of Applegate, California. 

Also surviving are grandchildren Peyton, Kyan, KorenCalum, McKayla and Connor.

A Celebration of Life for Mike McCary will be held at the Cotton Building in Port Townsend, Wa. on Friday, April 19 at 1 P.M. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Seattle Brain Cancer Research (
