Geography Bee winners announced

Weimar Hills School sixth grader Jayden Cypress won the school-level National Geographic Bee with questions regarding the U.S., Canada, Japan and Egypt. The question that put Jayden over the top was “What large body of water separates the Delmarya Peninsula from the southern part of New Jersey?” His winning answer: “Delaware Bay!” Eighth grade classroom winners at Weimar Hills were Patrick Bradshaw, Richie Hazard, Ruby Mapa, Jason Ramirez and Dylan Scalzo. Top winners in the seventh grade classrooms were Sarah Bianchi, Carson Gould, Maya Longtin, Cody Lippold and Mikey Riggs. Sixth grade classroom winners were Jason Dougherty Aaron Olson and Josh Vrooman. The champion at Chicago Park School is seventh grader Jakob Coonan, who battled nine other finalists to claim the 2010 championship. This is the eighth consecutive year Chicago Park has participated in the Bee. “It’s become a tradition here and the students really look forward to it,” said Principal Dan Zeisler. “Geography is a life skill that is often overlooked. This Bee is an opportunity to generate enthusiasm for the subject and honor those who have a passion for it. Runner-up honors at Chicago Park went to eighth grader Kendra Cote. Third place honors went to sixth grade student Samantha Ybarrando. Cypress and Coonan will now take a written test that will be submitted to the National Geographic Society for scoring. The top 100 scores in California will advance to this spring’s statewide competition. The top winner at the state level will move to the final competition in Washington, D.C. -- Staff Report
