Getting together for art's sake
The 5th Annual Art Show will be presented by seventh- and eighth-grade Alta-Dutch Flat Elementary School students from 3 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at the Oddfellows Lodge in Dutch Flat. The entrance fee is $5 and the students invite the community to browse and purchase local student art pieces, with prices negotiated by the students themselves. Refreshments will also be available. Proceeds go toward the graduates’ class trip at the end of the school.
Lisa Graham, principal, Alta-Dutch Flat School District, said lack of funding for the arts in public schools has increased the importance of volunteerism, parent participation and community support. “Our school has been lucky to have all three, led by Michelle Dixon who teaches art to our junior high students at least once a week,” Graham said. This year’s program has focused on painting and ceramics. “In one year,” Graham said, “Dixon drafted the ideas, taught the concepts, completed production, and developed merchandising skills with the class.”
