-A +A
A steady offensive attack and tenacious defense added up to victory for the Colfax High Lady Falcons soccer team at last week’s Buff Cup tournament held in Manteca. Blanking three straight opponents, the Lady Falcons came home with the tourney’s first-place trophy to improve their early season record to a fine 4-0. “The girls played with a lot of heart and as a team,” said Colfax coach Lefty Wilks about the Lady Falcons’ showing. “We have a lot of experience this season and it really showed up. I am looking forward to the season." Colfax opened the tournament with a 5-0 win over Weston Ranch as Celeena Wall’s three-goal effort showed the way. Chipping in with one goal each were Christina Keyes and Katy Thomas. The Lady Falcons then topped Pittman of Turlock, 3-0, in the semi-finals as Iona Lofrano scored twice and Wall added another. Colfax goalie Michallynn Hoffman also played well in the net for the winners. In Saturday afternoon’s championship game, the Lady Falcons overwhelmed Merced, 3-0, with Wall, Kelly Harris and Amy Blackburn all finding the back of the net for scores. Colfax was set to take on 4-0 and perennial Sierra Foothill League power Roseville on Wednesday. This weekend the Lady Falcons head to the Cal Cup tournament in Woodland where Colfax opens play on Friday at noon against River Valley of Yuba City. 2012 BUFF CUP AT MANTECA 1st Round: Colfax 5, Weston Ranch 0 Semi-Finals: Colfax 3, Pittman 0 Finals: Colfax 3, Merced 0
