After a slow start, the Colfax High girls soccer team picked up steam in the second half and went on to post a 4-0 Pioneer Valley League win at Bear River Monday afternoon.

“It took us awhile to get going today,” said Colfax coach Lefty Wilks. “We played a lot better in the second half.”

The victory for Colfax pushed their PVL record to 4-1 and moved the Lady Falcons into a first-place tie with Placer as the first half of league play came to an end. Placer, also 4-1, was handed its first PVL loss by Lincoln, 1-0, Monday night. Lincoln is right behind the Lady Falcons and Placer in the standings at 3-1-1.

In the Bear River win, Colfax grabbed a 1-0 lead 25 minutes into the match on a goal by Sam Melendez following an assist from Katy Thomas.

Hanging on to their slim 1-0 lead at halftime, the Lady Falcons then broke loose in the second half with Melendez, Marissa Pontius and Tori Henry all scoring goals. Credited with assists were Amber Tobiasz, Katie Garcia and Brittany Thomas.

According to Wilks, Brittany Thomas and Amanda Moore had strong defensive matches, while Garcia, Katy Thomas and Pontius all had solid all-around efforts.

In last week’s action, Colfax bounced back from its close loss to Placer by following Katy Thomas’ hat trick to a 6-1 drubbing of Center.

Besides Thomas' three goals, Colfax also received scores from Makenzy Thilmony, Pontius and Garcia.

Colfax, now 8-3-1 overall on the season, was slated to play an important match Wednesday against Lincoln. The Lady Falcons then play at Foothill at 7 p.m. Monday before traveling to Placer next Thursday night, April 25, also with a 7 p.m. start, in another potential pivotal league game.

JVs win pair – Colfax High’s JV girls soccer team picked up a pair of PVL wins defeating Center, 3-1, and Bear River, 6-0.

In the win over Center, Colfax's Jenny Vossoghi tallied three goals to pace the Lady Falcons. Vossoghi also tallied three goals in the Bear River match. Also scoring for Colfax were Celine Ford, Jessie Mora and Morgan Wybrecht.
