UPDATE: The Grass Valley Street railroad crossing continues to be closed today, Tuesday, March 6, as work continues on the railway through downtown Colfax. Union Pacific closed the Grass Valley Street railroad crossing as scheduled today. The closure will continue through Monday, March 5, and will affect both motorists and pedestrians. The work on track number two is part of UP’s project to upgrade the transcontinental railway between Colfax and Rocklin. Track replacement crews were in town in early January to replace wooden ties with new, concrete ties and install state-of-the-art seamless rails, held in place with metal ribbon clips on track number one. Alternative routes in and out of Colfax are the Highway 174 entrance at North Main Street or Tokayana Way, which leads to Placer Hills Road. According to Liisa Lawson-Stark, the local Director of Public Affairs for Union Pacific, the intermittent closures of the crossing will take place between 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., preventing Amtrak from making its scheduled stops at the Colfax Passenger Train Depot. – Martha Garcia
