A safer journey between Auburn and Grass Valley is the goal as Caltrans starts a $29 million widening project along Highway 49. Road-widening construction work is now starting on a 1.5-mile section of the highway between Little Valley Road and Cornette Way. The project, which is all in Nevada County, will widen Highway 49 from two to four lanes. The road will be divided by new concrete safety barriers. Also part of the construction project is installation of a new traffic signal at La Barr Meadows Road. “Highway 49 is a convenient connector between Grass Valley and Auburn,” Caltrans District 3 Director Jody Jones said. “This project will make the journey safer for everyone traveling on this important Gold Country highway.” Caltrans is targeting completion by the end of next year. Work is slated for overnight hours to minimize the impact during higher daytime traffic periods. During construction, motorists can expect delays of up to 10 minutes, according to Caltrans. Funding includes $7.6 million in state proposition money, $2 million from the American Recovery Reinvestment Act and $10.4-million from local and state government. – Journal Staff Report
