Jr. Falcons send two to title games

-A +A
A pair of Colfax Jr. Falcon youth football teams have reached the Sacramento Youth Football League Div. II championship games set for this Saturday at Highlands High in Sacramento. The Jr. Midgets and Jr. Peewee teams both won first-round playoff games last Saturday to advance to this Saturday’s title round. The Jr. Falcon Jr. Peewees will play Highlands at 10 a.m. followed by the Jr. Midgets team also playing Highlands at 2 p.m. A third Colfax playoff qualifying team, the Peewees, had their season end last Saturday in a 27-0 loss at the hands of Highlands. Here’s a recap of the two wins last weekend by Jr. Falcon squads: Jr. Midgets 22, Union Mine 6, at Union Mine: The Jr. Falcons made the long trek back to Union Mine a fruitful one by getting out of the starting blocks for a quick lead and never looking back in raising their second record to 9-0. Touchdown runs from Mason Hurst (11 yards) and Mason Ahrens (3 yards) and two Jack Beeman extra point boots gave the Jr. Falcons an early 16-0 lead. After a Luke Baggett fumble recovery, the Jr. Falcons stretched their lead to 22-0 when Hurst connected with J.T. Hobbs on a 22-yard scoring pass. Zane McDade and Ahrens both had pass interceptions for Colfax while Tyler Nickerson, Anthony Griggs and Nate Sawi played good defensive contests. Jr. Peewees 30, Monterey Trail 0, at Colfax: Gannon Brothers’ three-yard touchdown run got the Colfax gridders off and running and the Jr. Falcons never looked back in stymieing the visitors from Elk Grove. Quarterback Michael LaVigne had a big game as he scored on runs of 22 and 23 yards and also fired a 15-yard scoring pass to Bobby McCann. LaVigne also found time to kick three two-point conversions and add a pass interception, and Sean Divine and Elyjah Welch each had fumble recoveries for the winners, while Logan Wilkins, Nathan Searcy, Cameron Austin and McGuire Davis were the defensive standouts.
