Key soccer match April 25 at Placer
The Colfax Lady Falcons soccer team will head to Placer this evening, clinging by the slimmest of margins to the Pioneer Valley League lead.
“We’re still in first place but we’re going to have to work to stay there,” said Colfax coach Lefty Wilks following Monday’s disappointing 1-1 tie at Foothill that put Colfax on top of the PVL with a 5-1-1 record.
Colfax’s tie on Monday, coupled with Placer’s 4-0 win at Center, left the Lady Falcons a half-game or one point, 16 to 15, ahead of the Hillmen.
Placer, which fell at Foothill 1-0 last Wednesday while Colfax was using Katy Thomas’ second-half penalty kick to defeat Lincoln, 1-0, will host the Lady Falcons tonight at 7:15 p.m. at LeFebvre Stadium. The winner of this evening’s match should have the inside track to the PVL crown.
“There’s a long way to go,” Wilks said. “We took 25 shots on Monday against Foothill’s three but that’s how soccer goes sometimes.”
In the match versus Foothill, Colfax’s Katie Garcia hit the post with a shot about 10 minutes into the match and the rebound was followed in by Emilee Klug for a 1-0 Colfax lead.
But just before halftime the Lady Falcons were whistled for a foul in the penalty area and Foothill’s Vicky Milan converted for a 1-1 tie at halftime that stood through the second half.
While Colfax (5-1-1) and Placer (5-2-1) are currently running 1-2 in the league race, Lincoln (4-2-1) and Foothill (3-3-1) are also nipping at the leader’s heels.
Next week Colfax ends its regular season with two home matches, Monday against Center and Wednesday versus Bear River. Meanwhile, Placer ends with a match at Bear River on Monday and at home against Lincoln. Foothill and Lincoln will play Monday evening on the Zebras’ home field.
The top three PVL squads will qualify for the playoffs that will begin at home sites for Div. IV teams on May 9.
