Lady Falcons drop match 3-2
The Colfax High girls soccer team slipped back in the Pioneer Valley League soccer chase when the Lady Falcons lost a tough, 3-2, home match Monday afternoon against visiting Placer.
Both teams entered the match with identical 2-0 PVL records, but Placer was able to convert a pair of free kicks into goals, the last one off a header by Samantha Slade with just seven minutes left in the match that snapped a 2-2 tie.
Colfax had taken a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the match on a goal by Emilee Klug when the Hillmen came back to tie the match late in the first half as Brittany Bartle connected on a free kick from 30 yards out.
Placer took a 2-1 lead midway through the second half on a goal by Sabrina Viscuso, then the Lady Falcons answered on a score by Katie Garcia with 10 minutes to play.
That set the stage for Placer’s winning heroics on the Bartle free kick that Slade put through for the match winner.
Colfax coach Lefty Wilks was obviously disappointed in the final result but noted that Placer played a good match.
“We took 25 shots and only scored twice,” Wilks said. “That will catch up with you and it did today. Give Placer credit through, they played well.”
The win by Placer was the first time that a Hillmen girls soccer team had defeated a Colfax team at the varsity level since Placer entered the Pioneer Valley league in 2006. Colfax had defeated the Hillmen 14 straight times before Monday’s match.
Next week, Colfax plays at Bear River on Monday before hosting Lincoln on Wednesday at 4 p.m. to start the second half of league play.
