Former Colfax High coach George Massick (1980-90) will travel to the San Joaquin Valley this weekend to be part of Chowchilla High’s 50th anniversary reunion of the school’s North Sequoia League championship football team. Massick, who is now retired and resides in Weimar, was part of a two-man coaching crew with Dave Jordan who went to Chowchilla in 1962 to take over a team that hadn’t won a game the season before. In that ’62 season, under their new coaches, the Redskins – the mascot that still is with the school today – went 8-0-1 and defeated longtime rival Dos Palos for the first time in years for the league title. The team will be honored at halftime of Friday’s Chowchilla-Dos Palos game. The team’s mantra that season was: “Great players and great coaches can win a game but it takes a whole team to win a championship.” Massick went on to coach at St. John Bosco and Cerritos College before coming to Colfax, while Jordan went on to Grossmont JC and last year was inducted into the state JC Hall of Fame. “It should be a good time to relive old memories and rekindle friendships,” said Steve Weaver, one of the event’s organizers. “We’re glad George and Dave are able to be here. We couldn’t have done it with out them.”
