Fourty-four percent of the more than 2,000 Placer Sports readers who participated in the voting for last week’s Placer Sports Athlete of the Week selected Del Oro water polo star Alex Obert for the honor. The Golden Eagle senior is preparing to lead his team into the section tournament beginning this Friday after an impressive performance at the SFL league tourney last week. More than 900 of our readers voted for him in our poll. Obert barely edged out Vista del Lago soccer’s Cody Dow, who is also preparing with his team for a section playoff run that begins Friday. Colfax running back Pat Rawlins also had a strong showing, but fell short of Obert’s pace. The newest feature at our regional all-sports Web site continues this week with three new candidates chosen from the high schools throughout the Gold Country Media footprint – covering Placer County as well as the communities of Folsom and El Dorado Hills. Voting will run from Monday through Sunday each week. Log on each week to check out the new nominees and cast your vote. This week’s poll includes a pair of football players going up against a senior volleyball player. Granite Bay flyback Matt Kine delivered a school-record 343 all-purpose yards in last week’s Grizzly win over Roseville. The 5-10, 175-pound flyback also scored four touchdowns in that game. The senior has been working his way more into the Granite Bay plans as a runner and a kick returner as the Grizzlies won their first league game and improved their overall mark to 6-2. Josh Klem, a senior, is the leader of a Placer High defense that has gotten very stingy in recent weeks. He is averaging seven tackles per game and has five interceptions on the season. The senior linebacker and his defensive mates have led the Hillmen to a 7-1 start this season. Shelby Young is a four-year starter at outside hitter for the Whitney varsity volleyball team. The 5-10 senior is a major reason for the growth in Whitney volleyball over the past few years. She had 24 kills and 27 digs in a recent win over Lincoln, and 17 kills with 40 digs when the Wildcats forced Colfax to five games last week. Which athlete do you prefer? Log on to and vote.
