After reading Linda Thompson's letter in the Opinion/Comment section of the July 28 Record, I feel that Linda does not understand the role of public schools. The reason why the legislature (not the governor as Linda asserts) crafted the law that includes contributions of gays and lesbians in history lessons is to insure that kids get to hear and see things that conservative parents would not dream of sharing with their kids. This is also why we have private schools and home school – so folks can have their kids shielded from what they don't like. Alan Shuttleworth, Colfax
