Colfax brought one of its better tennis teams in recent years to Placer High on Thursday.

But you wouldn’t be able to tell by the final score.

The Hillmen coed tennis team opened Pioneer Valley League play with an 8-1 victory over the Falcons.

“Some close matches today,” said Placer coach Tom Isaac. “This is the best team they’ve had in a few years but it still wasn’t enough.”

Colfax (1-1) scored its lone victory in No. 2 boys doubles play, as John Crane and Taylor Dorsey beat Troy Potter and James James, 7-5, 7-6, (7-5).

In singles action on the boys side, Placer’s Brendon Axelbaum beat Drew Detwiler, 6-1, 6-4, and Robert Kuklica beat Kyle Detwiler, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

In No. 1 doubles, the Hillmen’s Andrew Carducci and Kyle Fontes beat Chris Harshman and Conner Havens, 7-5, 6-2.

“Andrew is our No. 1 player, but the rules allow us to move him around a little bit,” Isaac said. “What a great thing for him to come back after having that car accident. He’s a little nervous starting off but finished off strong.”

In No. 1 singles girls play, Lindsay Holden beat Justine Hansen 6-4, 6-4. Also in singles, Clare McInerney defeated beat Justine Hansen 6-4, 6-4.

In doubles, Placer’s Jessi Fry and Tani Thomsen beat Linda Siegel and Kristina Rossi 6-1, 6-0, and Camila Polinsky and Ana De Miguel defeated Elise Douglas and C.S. Green, 6-3, 6-0.

In mixed doubles, Placer’s Andrew Dahlin and Kirstin Schauble scored a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Rich Hazzard and Alex Noble.

Isaac said, “Colfax has one of their better teams since we’ve been in the PVL. We felt very fortunate that the score was that lopsided.”

But he also acknowledged his team is loaded with several past section doubles championship winners in Holden, Fontes, Schauble and McInerney.

Placer returns to the court to host Center on April 3 to make up a contest that was rained out earlier in the week.
