Gearing up for this week?s Area I Tournament, Post 84 American Legion?s baseball team took two of three games in a weekend series from Antelope to capture the District 7 championship. The wins, which move Post 84?s record to 19-7 on the season, now vault Auburn into this week?s Area I tourney that Post 84 will host at James Field. The Area I tournament began Wednesday and will run through Saturday or Sunday, if necessary. Auburn was scheduled to open its Area I action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. by taking on the Fairfield Expos. In last weekend?s action, Post 84 got off to a good start on Thursday by notching a 10-7 win. Alex Mason (Del Oro) and Troy Runte (Bear River) combined efforts on the hill for the winners. At the plate, A.J. Newby (Del Oro) and Nick Viola (Jesuit) both went 2x2 with a pair of RBIs apiece, while Jake Sween (Valley Christian) and Dave Campbell (Colfax) both added doubles and Adam Tricomo (Colfax) a RBI single. In Saturday?s first game, Post 84 wrapped up the crown by registering a 12-5 win as Mason had a big game with a double and home run and a pair of runs batted in. Also having a hand in the win were Viola who rapped a two-run double, Jake Jarman with a RBI double, and James Harris with a hit and two runs driven in. Viola picked up the win with four innings of work before Sween tossed the last three for the save. Post 894 dropped the third game of the series, 7-5, despite seven strong mound innings from Harris. Swinging big sticks for Auburn were Mason and Viola, each with 2x2 games and two runs batted in. Newby added a 2x3 outing, while Tricomo was 1x1.
