The last Colfax Elementary School kindergarten class toured the Puzzle People store last week. Owners Michael and Pat Smith are closing the Colfax store and moving to Mendocino at the end of the summer. They plan to live on acreage they inherited from Pat’s family and build a small studio so they can continue to sell their puzzles online. “We want to be young enough to enjoy our retirement,” said Pat. Located in the historic Fruit Exchange building, the couple typically offered 70 to 80 tours annually to schools from throughout the area. “We’ve had some from as far away as Sierra City,” Michael said, adding a Sacramento school will be the last school to tour the store. The Smiths will hold open houses throughout the month of June to give children an opportunity to tour the facility and paint their names on puzzle pieces. The Smiths also plan to be open during Colfax’s Independence Day celebration on July 3. “That’s the last day we’ll be open,” Pat said.
