Those who want to really get involved in 2011 Colfax Railroad Days – coming to town Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2 – have lots of opportunities to do just that. Railroad Days Celebration activities include a Business Fair, Outdoor Quilt Show, Colfax Heritage 40s Barbecue Dinner, Classic Car Show, Garden Club Plant Sale, Beer Garden, Depot Street Dance, Historic Locomotive Display, Railroad Art Show, Railroad Film Festival, and more. Vendors from the greater Colfax area can sign up for the Business Fair to be held Saturday, Oct. 1. Fees vary depending upon Colfax Area Chamber of Commerce membership status, and a free booth is offered to new members. Call 637-1665 to participate in the Business Fair. Entries are now open for the Sierra Vista Art Center Railroad Days Art Exhibition and Sale, to be held Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 1 and 2, at the Sierra Vista Community Center. Entries are $3 each, limited to eight entries per artist. Hand-delivered entries are due Thursday, Sept. 29. To enter art in the art show, call 368-1491, 263-0687, 305-5813 or 613-8973. At 2 p.m. on Sunday, there will be a raffle drawing for a circus train painting by Nancy Hakala. Railroad activities will be taking place all weekend long, including a visit by a train from the Western Pacific Railroad Museum in Portola. Kids and adults can ride historic railroad equipment while learning the importance of railroad safety from the Operation Lifesaver program. There will be model trains, motor car-track rides, a single-piston engine display, mini steamers to ride on, and a Railroad Film Festival from 9 to 3 p.m. both days at the Colfax Theatre. Volunteers are needed to help with Railroad Days events. To get youth organizations, service clubs, or families involved, call the Colfax Area Chamber of Commerce – Railroad Days sponsor – at 346-8888. Call Loretta Hoofman at 389-8250 to volunteer in youth activities at the Kid Zone at the Sierra Vista Community Center. Tickets are now available for Saturday’s Heritage Dinner, to be held at the community center. Admission is $20 for adults or $15 for children, and are available at the Sierra Vista Art Center.
