Railroad work continues in Colfax
By: Martha Garcia, Colfax Record Editor
Grass Valley Street crossing to stay closed until Sunday
Union Pacific crews tore up the Grass Valley Street railroad crossing – the main thoroughfare through Colfax – right on schedule this week. The crossing is expected to be open as scheduled by Sunday, Jan. 8. A Union Pacific rig hauled away slabs of asphalt Tuesday that were removed in UP’s project to upgrade the railway. Rails marked with green paint are the old track that is being removed, to be replaced by new rails, in the center, that have been welded by state-of-the-art machinery and that will eliminate the “clinkety-clank” of trains on the railroad. The wooden ties are also being replaced by concrete ties. Rail spikes will also become a thing of the past, as the new rails and ties will be held together with ribbon-like pins. The project is also affecting railroad crossings at Mt. Howell Road, Weimar Cross Road, Paoli Lane and Lawyers Crossing, which are also scheduled to be closed beginning today and Friday.
