It?s not just the U.S. president?s office that?s up for election this year. Throughout Placer County, there are 180 boards, districts and agencies that have open seats that must be filled at the Nov. 6 Presidential General Election. ?Serving on a local district provides opportunities to help shape the communities in which we live. As a board member, you can frame the debate on issues such as academic standards, environmental protection, and public safety,? said Jim McCauley, Placer County clerk-recorder-registrar of voters. Candidate filing for the November election opened July 16 and closes Aug. 10. If an incumbent does not to file by Aug. 10, the filing period for that office will be extended to Aug. 15 for individuals other than the incumbent. Individuals interested in running for office can learn how to file for office and run an effective campaign from a panel of speakers during a free candidate workshop to be hosted by the county Office of Elections. The public workshop begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Finance and Administration Building, located at 2956 Richardson Dr. in Auburn. Locally, there are two offices up for election on the Colfax city council. The terms of Colfax city councilmen Steve Harvey and Ken Delfino expire in December, as does the term of Melba Delfino, city treasurer. Ken Delfino said Tuesday that he has no comment at this time as to whether he will seek re-election on the council. ?There have to be other qualified people who have this community at heart and will want to run,? he said. Melba Delfino was not available for comment. However, her husband, Ken Delfino, said he knows she will not be throwing her hat in the ring. ?She has let it be known to other people that she will not run for re-election,? he said. The boards of trustees of the Colfax Elementary, Alta-Dutch Flat, and Placer Hills Union school districts will each have two seats up for election. The Colfax-area seat on the Placer Union High School District must also be filled. Three seats each will be open for the Alta Fire and Placer Hills Fire protection districts. Seats are also open on the Heather Glen Community Service District, 2; Christian Valley Park Community Service District, 2; Meadow Vista County Water District, 3; Midway Heights County Water District, 2; and for the Colfax-area representative on the Placer County Water Agency and the Auburn Area Recreation and Park District.
