Water pipeline leaking in Colfax

Customers north of Gearhart Lane lose water service

Gearhart Lane, off North Main Street, is closed as Placer County Water Agency crews investigate the cause of a leaking water main. Water service was cut off Friday afternoon to homes and businesses at the Highway 174 end of Colfax.

According to PCWA spokesman Mike Nichol, crews must first dig up the 12-inch asbestos cement pipeline to determine the cause of the leak. And because there is a Pacific Gas & Electric power pole close by, a power company crew will also have to respond to let PCWA know “what they have in the area,” Nichol said.

Nichol said he currently did don’t know if the leak was storm caused or whether there’s an actual break in the pipe. If so, he said, “We’d have to cut out a section of pipe and drop a new one in again. … We have to dig it up to assess the problem.”

PCWA customer service is in the process of contacting customers to advice them of the service outage, he said.

Nichol said he can't estimate how long it will take to return water service to customers. “If it’s a broken piece of main, it could be late into the night,” he said.
