Beth Madsen watches Colfax Mayor Sherrie Blackmun, left, present 10-year-old Alex Madsen with a proclamation honoring his efforts to combat global warming.

About the only thing everybody agreed on during Tuesday night’s city council meeting was that 10-year-old Alex Madsen deserved special recognition for his remarkable achievement of raising $1,501 to fight global warming.

To a rousing round of applause, Mayor Sherrie Blackmun presented the Colfax youth with a proclamation recognizing his initiative and enthusiasm for making a difference in the world.

Adding to the honor, Brandon Ida of California Senator Barbara Boxer’s office presented Madsen with a similar proclamation during the meeting.

As reported earlier, Madsen decided to celebrate his 10th birthday last month by holding live and silent auctions to raise money for the Sierra Club, Greenpeace and Conservation International.

Soliciting 38 local businesses, Alex gathered 31 items that were put up for bid at an auction he hosted July 9 at his mother Beth’s business, Bridges to Healing, on South Auburn Street.

Alex’s public-spirited enterprise attracted the attention of Sierra Club member Robert Hanna, a descendent of pioneer conservationist John Muir.

Hanna and his wife Lavina, who are residents of Roseville, attended the auction.

“You don’t meet very many adults with the passion that Alex has,” Hanna said after the auction. “To find that kind of spirit in a 10-year-old is remarkable. He is a visionary and a leader.”
