Women Who Kick Comedy Butt, an all-female stand-up comedy troupe founded by Colfax resident Grace White, will be in Colfax Saturday night.

The comedians are hosting a comedy show at the Colfax Theater in hopes of raising awareness as well as funds for lung cancer research.

For an extra touch of fun, there will be a red carpet placed in front of the theater at 7:15 p.m. Local merchants will display their logos on a backdrop where guests can have their pictures taken with the comedians.

Doors to the theater will open at 7:30 p.m. The comedy show will begin at 8:30 p.m.

Earlier this year, the troupe hosted a sell-out benefit on behalf of their founder, who has stage 4 lung cancer.

While White’s condition has gotten worse, her comedian friends have decided to hold another show to support White’s activism on behalf of the American Lung Association.

According to White’s daughter and the producer of this show, Alyssa Cook, the comedian lineup features different comedians than the ones who performed in March. However, Grace Fraga will return as emcee for Saturday‘s show.

Born in Argentina and rumored to be a distant relative of Eva Peron, Fraga’s career was launched in New Orleans.

She has been nominated for a Best Actress in a comedy from the Marquee and Storer Boone awards and won the Big Easy Entertainment Award for Best Supporting Actress in Dalt Wonk’s comedy, “Rio Seco.”

Fraga has her own TV show, “Laff It Off With Grace” on the Time Warner Cable channel. It airs on six TV stations in Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, New Orleans, Reno, Wisconsin and Minnesota.

She’s currently producing live stand-up comedy shows in New Orleans and Los Angeles and produces TV shows through her company, Juan-ah-Laff Productions.

Joining Fraga on stage Saturday night will be Gayla Johnson, Boxcar, Linda Costello, Kat Simmons, Jackie Marakuso, Joanie Coyote and Tara Walden.

The brainchild of Grace White, a resident of Colfax for 33 years, Women Who Kick Comedy Butt was conceived to spotlight funny women. Each comic in her own unique way shows how women have come into their own onstage, claims White.

“No longer restricted to voicing vanilla views on love and marriage, these bright women offer more flavors than Baskin-Robbins and represent all ages, ethnicities and cultural backgrounds,” White said. “They will be telling their tales for all to hear, guaranteeing a laugh-fest you really don’t want to miss.”

Since being diagnosed with non-smokers’ lung cancer, White has become a spokesperson for the current healthcare crisis in America.

After her daughter purchased medical insurance for her, White was diagnosed on her first exam.

The diagnosis made her even more determined to shine a spotlight on the enormity of the problem.

“Forty-eight million working American families are without healthcare of any kind,” she said. “Many can’t even afford their medications,” a situation she describes as “obscene” for the wealthiest country in the world.

White believes her cancer would have been caught at an earlier stage if she had had healthcare coverage and had regular check-ups.

Since then, “thousands of people have stepped up to help me,” White said. “I‘m deeply touched by the overwhelming proportion of people who care. It is beyond my comprehension the amount of love that continues to be shown,” adding the comedic community has been particularly demonstrative through donations of their time, resources and encouragement.

“People can help me by coming to the Sept. 20 show and by visiting www.californialung.org, which easily informs people about environmental health issues as well as lung cancer, tuberculosis, emphysema, pneumonia, acidosis, HIV/AIDS, lung disease and influenza,” White concluded. “Baby boomers alone could change health care if all of them would use their voice.”

Tickets, at $20 per person, can be purchased at Calamity Jane’s Confectionary in the historic Freight Depot on Main Street or at the Mane Tamer in the Fruit Exchange Building on Railroad Street.
